When Cultures Meet

The programme begins with two creative workshops running parallelly. Textile artist Erin C. Doherty invites participants to create their own stuffed talisman charm. In a magical sewing circle, you will learn the basics of hand sewing while crafting a lucky charm to carry with you on your bag or backpack. Working with second-hand fabrics, beads, sequins, lace, and ribbons, we will decorate our talismans together, letting the rhythm of our needles become a way of connecting with both the materials and one another.

At the same time, artist Chuan-Yun Hsieh and designer Doğa Gönüllü invite participants on a scavenger walk through Lombok, the neighbourhood where De Voorkamer is based. Along the way, you will collect textures, traces, and found objects from the city, bringing them together with photographs created by participants of De Voorkamer’s photography course. Together, these elements will form a collective zine exploring the many ways of seeing and experiencing Utrecht, with each participant receiving their own copy.

Following the workshops, we gather around the table for a community dinner prepared by Joseph Razouk, one of De Voorkamer's community chefs. Sharing food has always been a core element of De Voorkamer: a moment to come together, share stories, and connect.

We conclude the day with a Culture Shock concert, De Voorkamer's recurring concert series that pairs musicians from different cultural backgrounds to work together for the first time, create new music and present their works live. For U? Festival 2026, we welcome Senegalese percussionist Ibou Ndong and Dutch guitarist and composer Tobias van der Pijl, who first met through Culture Shock several years ago and have continued collaborating ever since. Blending West African rhythms with jazz, Latin, and classical influences, their performance leaves plenty of room for improvisation and audience participation.
