From October 10 to 25, De Voorkamer in Utrecht presents the first solo exhibition of Brazilian artist Louise Bezerra (1980–2025). The opening takes place on Saturday, October 10, starting 18:00 with a performance by La Batuta, an Amsterdam based Brazilian percussion group. We will also be having a community dinner prepared with recipes from the Lou in the Kitchen project.
Curated by Brazilian artists Mariana Moraes and Luisa Coser, the exhibition presents an unprecedented selection of works from different moments and artistic languages of Louise’s work.

Her work brings together photography, embroidery, video and collage, finding its strength in the dialogue between these different languages.. Embroidery, in particular, becomes a ritual: a silent and meticulous gesture through which the artist reinscribes the body, transforms symbols and imagines other possibilities of existence.
Driven by her experience with cancer, but never limited by it, Louise developed a poetic practice that moves through many layers: the Amazon, plants, rivers, animals, saints, the feminine universe, spirituality, collective memory, and the relationship between the human body and the earth.
About the artist:
Louise Bezerra (1980–2025) was a Brazilian visual artist, researcher and activist, born in Belém do Pará, in the Amazon. She lived in Utrecht from 2019 to 2025, where she intensified her artistic practice and collaborated with De Voorkamer.
Her work brings together photography, embroidery, video, collage and image research in a practice that she understood as a process of transmutation and regeneration. Living with breast cancer for more than a decade, she created her “enchanted images”: works that cross the body, spirituality, nature, feminisms of the Global South and anti-colonial thought, transforming scars, memories and symbols into new possibilities of existence.
