Exhibition opening: Friendship Quilt workshop series
Come and join us for a little bit of Southern hospitality with an event to culminate our community workshop series, “Friendship Quilt” followed by a community dinner by the workshop host! We will also exhibit a previous tapestry created a few years ago with community members.
Come and join us on November 14 for a little bit of Southern hospitality with an event to culminate our community workshop series, “Friendship Quilt.” Led by interdisciplinary textile artist Erin C. Doherty, participants explored the work of the quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, USA, and created intuitive, small-format quilts. They were also inspired by community quilt projects such as the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project and the Stolen Neighbors Quilt Project to create a collaborative friendship quilt.
For this quilting series, we leaned into mistakes, wonkiness, and the perfectly imperfect to let go of convention. During this presentation, we will share our quilted works with the community.
As an homage to the region that is home to the inspiring women quilters of Gee’s Bend and the workshop instructor, we will celebrate with a lucky meal from the Deep South of the USA, usually eaten on New Year’s Day to bring good fortune for the year. This meal consists of stewed black-eyed peas, cornbread, collard greens, and Erin’s famous banana pudding for dessert. ✨
Please join us to celebrate the idea of making something out of scraps, the power of community, and making with our hands.
This exhibition will also include a previous community tapestry created during a previous artist in residency!
