About the course

Learning to Look

What is photography to you?

Is it a way of communicating through beautiful images? A way of remembering people, places and moments? A medium for expressing your own perspective? Or a way to get to know yourself and observe the world around you?

Over five weeks, together with artist and photographer Chuan-Yun Hsieh, we will explore photography as a way of learning how to look. Rather than focusing only on taking beautiful photographs, we will explore how to find and shape your own way of seeing and expressing yourself through images.

Using the most accessible camera we have, our smartphones, we will experiment with light, colour, composition, perspective, aperture, editing and other basic photographic techniques to discover what kind of photography feels right to us. Through photo walks and creative exercises, we will gradually develop our own photographic projects.

The third session of the course will be part of the U? Festival programme. Using photographs created by the course participants alongside contributions from festival visitors, we will collectively create a unique zine about Utrecht.

This course is open to beginners, with no previous photography experience needed. All you need is a smartphone that can capture images and curiosity about how you see the world.

The main working language of the course is English.

Please note that submitting this form does not guarantee a place in the course. As spots are limited, we will select participants after the application deadline. We’ll contact you shortly after 18 October to let you know whether you have been offered a place.

Are you living in an AZC, are you living in Utrecht and have a refugee status, or are you undocumented?
You don’t need any professional equipment for this course, but you will need a smartphone to take photos. To make the course as useful as possible for you, we’d like to ask you a few questions about your smartphone, your experience, and what you’d like to learn.
How experienced are you in photography? (This will not affect the outcome of your application)
